Did I Break My Toilet?

Believe it or not, sometimes you can break your toilet. For example, one of the most common signs of a "broken" toilet is that the water keeps running -- even after you've flushed minutes ago. We know that this can be an extremely frustrating home plumbing problem. Fortunately, it’s a fairly simple fix -- and your toilet might not be broken beyond repair. Here are a few of the most common reasons behind your running toilet — and what you can do to fix it:

Why Your Toilet is Running:

There is a Problem with the Chain.

Check the connection between your flush lever and the rubber flap. If the chain is too short or too long, it may interfere with the flapper closing properly, leaving you with a running toilet.

The Flapper is Broken.

If the rubber flapper in your toilet tank is broken or warped, water will start to leak. You will want to replace this flapper — don’t worry, it’s relatively cheap and easy to replace.

The Float is Not in the Right Position.

After you flush the toilet, the tank should stop filling up with water. However, if the float pump is too high, the tank will keep running. Try bending the rod connecting the flota to the pump so that it sits lower in the tank.
