Before Help Arrives, Here’s How to Troubleshoot a Broken AC

It can be quite alarming to come home and notice that your central air conditioner isn’t working. Whether it’s a brand new unit or one that is climbing up there in age, there are a variety of reasons as to why it’s not turning on or functioning correctly. Before the initial feeling of panic kicks in, take a deep breath, and check these vital areas, first.

Replace Your Filter

When was the last time you replaced your AC filter? Whether that was last week or last year, it’s essential to swap it out much more often than you think. On average, filters for HVAC units last approximately one to two months — and any time after that, they start to bog down the performance of your unit. If you don’t regularly change out your filter, you’ll begin to experience higher energy bills and an uneven distribution of cold air throughout your home.

Examine the Thermostat

Known to be the indoor brain of your unit (the outdoor brain is your compressor), it’s possible for this vital piece of the puzzle to be in need of some TLC. One of the most common thermostat-related problems is that the device might not be set to “cool” — it may be on “fan,” instead. Another possibility is that your thermostat may be turned off or not have power running to the device.

Turn Off Your Circuit Breaker

Known to help prevent power surges in your living space, it’s possible that your air conditioner may have encountered a tripped circuit breaker — that’s a common reason as to why it won’t turn on. To see if this is the root of the problem, go to your circuit breaker and turn off the switch that leads to your AC. Once complete, give it a few minutes to rest, then turn the switch back on. This should help fix the problem — but if something still doesn’t seem right, it’s best to call for professional assistance.
