How Can I Stop Wasting Water at Home?
One of the biggest holidays happens to fall on April 22, but do you know what it is? That’s right: it’s time to celebrate Earth Day! Our planet gives us an abundance of incredible resources, including one of the most vital to our existence: water. Although water is a renewable resource (meaning it will usually be replenished), it still costs money to deliver it to our homes.
All too often, saving money on your bills means cutting back on comfort, but we’ve come up with some innovative and easy ways to stop wasting water. Not only will our planet thank you, but so will your wallet!
1. Wash All Your Fruits and Veggies at Once
Instead of running the water for a few minutes when you cook, fill up a large pot and add one to two cups of plain white vinegar. Allow the produce to sit for several minutes, then give them a quick rinse in the sink.
2. Use Ice to Water Plants
The next time you drop an ice cube on the floor, don’t toss it in the sink. Instead, use it to water your potted plants! Many people accidentally kill their house plants by overwatering them, so recycle your drink’s used cubes and let them nourish your plants in a timely manner. This method helps gradually moisten the soil, allowing water to nourish the roots instead of pooling at the bottom.
3. Use a Single Glass Each Day
Refill the same glass throughout the day, or stick to a refillable bottle. Doing so will leave fewer dishes to wash later, saving you time, money, and water!
4. Reuse Dehumidifier Water
Instead of dumping the water from your dehumidifier down the drain, use it to water the lawn or some outdoor plants.
5. Schedule Showers Back-to-Back
If you take a shower right after someone else, the hot water will come quicker, so you won’t have to stand around waiting for it to heat up! It’s normal for water to take a bit longer to warm up after it’s been off for a while, but if you notice your hot water takes minutes to arrive, it’s time to have your water heater checked.
