Reasons Why My AC is Making Strange Noises
The last thing you want to hear when you turn on your central air conditioner is a weird noise. If something is rattling, rumbling or even screeching the minute you turn on your unit, there’s most likely a problem lurking within your system that needs to be repaired ASAP.
Try not to panic just yet. Many strange noises aren’t that abnormal and lucky for you, you don’t have to figure out what the problem is. Just call in a pro from our team if you happen to hear any of the following:
Rattling
Over time, the nuts and bolts that keep your AC in place can come loose. Central air conditioners are comprised of three parts, each one susceptible to normal wear-and-tear.
To check for any loose bolts, it’s best to start with the easiest spots. Look for any cover plates, first, and make sure that the screws and bolts are in place. If you find that the problem persists after tightening, you’ll have to remove the cover plate and check inside the unit — but make sure to turn your AC off completely before you make any internal adjustments.
If you don’t feel comfortable making any adjustments on your own, please don’t hesitate to give us a call; we’ll be more than glad to help get your AC up and running!
Whistling Sounds
Cracks in the seals of your AC can result in high-pitched whistling sounds blowing through your vents. Check the seals around the frame of your central unit. Tighten any loose screws and bolts, then replace any heat tape that may have worn down or been damaged.
If your unit also features caulking, you may want to patch up any small cracks or gaps to prevent loose air from seeping into the system.
Screeching
Air conditioners have belts that can wear out and cause a loud screeching noise whenever the unit is turned on or off. If the noise is more like metal-on-metal, you may have a broken fan motor on your hands that will need to be replaced.
Clicking While Running
Repeated clicking from your AC is a massive nuisance. If the clicking persists and grows louder when the unit is turned on, you might want to check out your central unit for any blockages.
Be sure to clear foliage and any debris from within five feet of your outside unit, and avoid blocking with any furniture or plants that could obstruct proper air flow.
