How to Save Water in 2018

We’re already halfway through the first month of 2018, and what better way to celebrate than to save some water! There are a variety of simple ways to save water around your home — which will also save money on your water bill, too. If you’re looking to conserve in the new year, then here are some simple tips to follow:

Water Conservation Tips:

  • Check for Leaks – The first step in making your home more water-efficient is to check for leaks. Read your house water meter and check it again about two hours later. If the meter is not the same (and you haven’t used any water), then there is a leak. You should also check your toilet for leaks by putting food coloring in the tank, flushing the bowl, and checking to see if the coloring appears in the bowl. If you see the coloring spread, it is likely that you have a toilet leak.

  • Insulate Your Pipes -Insulated water pipes help you get hot water faster. This means that you’ll spend less time waiting for your shower to heat up and save water.

  • Turn Off The Water When Brushing – Turn off the water while brushing your teeth! There is no need to keep the water running when you aren’t using it.

  • Only Wash Full Loads -Whether using the dishwasher or doing a load of laundry, only use full loads. This will allow for optimal water conservation.

  • Limit Your Shower Time – Sometimes a shower can run over 10 minutes — but that’s far too long and wastes water. If possible limit showers to 5 minutes to save water!

  • Wash Dark Clothes Cold – Believe it or not, it’s better to wash dark clothing in cold water rather than warm water. The reason? You’ll save water and will also preserve the color of your clothing, too! It’s a win-win situation!
