When you think of Valentine’s Day, what comes to mind? For some, it could be heart-shaped chocolates, flowers, and candy hearts — but what about experiencing a plumbing problem on the big day? Even though it’s a holiday, that won’t stop a sink drain from clogging or a toilet from overflowing.

However, there are some ways you can prevent a not so pleasant ~surprise~ from occurring on the loveliest day of the year!

Dispose of Candy in a Garbage Can

What would Valentine’s Day be without a lavish array of candy? From heart-shaped chocolates to candy hearts with little messages printed on them, the list goes on and on! And while these sweet treats may all look and taste different, they do share one thing in common: Any leftovers should be tossed in a nearby garbage can.

For instance, if you can’t eat another candy heart and you’re looking to get rid of the remaining few in the box, do not toss the hearts into a nearby sink drain or flush them down the toilet. Although it seems as if they can disintegrate, there’s a chance they’ll get stuck to the walls of a drainpipe (if it hasn’t been cleaned in quite some time) or can cause a clog in your toilet. Just remember the old saying: “When in doubt, throw it out.”

Keep Cooking Grease Out of the Sink

Are you planning on cooking a homemade meal this Valentine’s Day for you and your loved one? If so, it’s essential to make sure that you keep your sink drain clear of any cooking oil or grease! Although these culinary essentials are typically a liquid when you use them, they begin to solidify the minute they’re not exposed to heat.

And when these cooking substances come in contact with your drainpipe, they’ll have a higher chance of solidifying and clinging to the walls of the pipe and will cause it to narrow over time — never a good thing. Therefore, when you’re ready to dispose of cooking oil or grease, pour the liquid into an old coffee can (or container), let it harden, and then toss it away in the garbage!
